What Kind of Auto Insurance Do You Need?

Illinois Insurance Center is dedicated to providing the types of auto insurance that the residents of Chicago and the state of Illinois need. But what does that mean for you? There are many variables to consider and options that you will see, but let us start with the basics of what is required by the state in terms of auto insurance.

You must have liability insurance.

It is state law across the country that everyone who drives a car has to have liability insurance. If you are in an accident and you cause damage and/or injury, you will be liable to pay for damage whether or not you can afford it. In order to protect the injured parties, Chicago liability auto insurance pays damages you owe. Liability auto insurance includes:

  • Damage to Property - Basic auto insurance covers up to $15,000 in damage to other cars or other property.

  • Bodily Injury - For a single accident, a total of $40,000 is allowed for injuries to the other parties, limited to $20,000 per person.

  • Uninsured Motorists - Despite Illinois laws requiring liability auto insurance, there are still some people who take the unfair risk of driving without insurance. To protect you from those drivers, or from hit-and-run accidents, you can get help with injury expenses, but not vehicular damage. The amounts are the same as the bodily injury amounts.

  • Underinsured Motorist Coverage – This may be one of the most important extensions to your automobile policy. If you are in an accident with someone who is underinsured and they are at fault, your UIM insurance will provide the coverage needed for your injuries. Â

  • Medical - While not legally required, it is optional to add medical payments in order to cover your injuries or the injuries of passengers in your car in the case of an accident which is deemed your fault.

Additional Options for Chicago Auto Insurance

There are some options that cost extra but will add value to your insurance policy.

  • Collision - In the case of any collision, no matter fault, your policy pays for repairs, above the deductible, which is your portion to pay.
  • Comprehensive - No matter the cause of damage to the car, including weather, theft, fire, etc., the policy covers costs after your deductible is paid.
  • Repair Deductible - When the vehicle needs repairs, you will pay the deductible and the balance will be paid by the insurance company.
  • Rental & Towing - If the car breaks down and needs to be towed and you need to rent a replacement vehicle after an accident, the expenses will be reimbursed by the insurance company.
