Auto Insurance Form with Miniature Car — Chicago, IL — Illinois Insurance Center Inc
If you drive, then you are required to have car insurance in Illinois. If you are caught without insurance, you could face severe fines and penalties and could even lose your license. To keep your license under these circumstances, or if you have specific legal issues, you will need an SR-22. Here is more information about who needs SR-22 insurance and how to get coverage.

What Is an SR-22?
An SR-22 is not actually insurance itself. Instead, it's a document that tells the state that you have purchased the minimum amount of car insurance. This document is also known as a statement of financial responsibility. If your situation calls for an SR-22, you must file the required paperwork promptly to avoid complete loss of your license.

Why Do Some People Need an SR-22?
Most people do not need to file an SR-22 unless they are convicted of certain types of driving-related offenses. Even if you don't own a car, you will need to have an SR-22 if you want to drive again. Here is a list of some of the most common reasons why you may be required to get an SR-22.
  • You drove without insurance. If you were caught driving without insurance at least three times, then you will need to file an SR-22. The same goes for if you get into an accident without insurance.
  • You drove without a license. Driving without a license will not always require an SR-22. However, you will have to get this document if you cause an accident while you are unlicensed.
  • You got a DUI or several serious tickets. Serious traffic infractions, such as if you get a DUI or drive recklessly, could result in the necessity of an SR-22.
  • You failed to pay tolls. If you failed to pay tolls on multiple occasions, and you rack up a large bill, then you could risk a loss of your license unless you file an SR-22.
  • You didn’t pay child support. In Illinois, if you don't pay court-ordered child support, then your license could be suspended. You may be required to file an SR-22 as one of the requirements to regain your license.
  • You canceled a previous SR-22. If you've had SR-22 insurance coverage in the past, and you didn't keep it for the minimum amount of time, then you must have the document resubmitted. You may also be required to get another SR-22 if you have another violation.
If any of these situations apply to you, you’ll have to work with an insurance provider to get the correct coverage and file the correct paperwork.

How Do You Get Car Insurance With an SR-22?
If you need an SR-22, then you must find an insurance company that sells the required insurance. Not all companies have policies that meet this requirement, so you will need to shop around. Once you set up your policy, the insurance company will submit the SR-22 to the state. You cannot submit this document yourself. After the required time period has passed, you can shop for regular car insurance again.

What Happens if You Don't Get Insurance With an SR-22?
If you are required to get an SR-22, then you must get qualified insurance or you will lose your driving privileges. If you plan to drive in the future, then you may find that getting a new license or a license renewal to be difficult. If you don't have a car, then you can meet the SR-22 requirements with non-owner car insurance. This type of insurance protects you when you borrow or rent another person's vehicle.

An SR-22 can help you get back on the road again, legally. It eliminates gaps in your insurance coverage that could make things more difficult in the future. Illinois Insurance Center can help you get SR-22 insurance so that you can remain compliant with the law.
